The SG Special was born in 1961 as a rough 'n' ready alternative to the flagship model, the Standard, and has been a favorite of countless rock, blues, punk and fusion players ever since. Just like the classic vintage SGs of the '60s, the Special with Humbuckers has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the asymmetrical "double-horned" double-cutaway design.
Body
A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain, resulting in a tone that's suitable for a wide range of musical styles. The SG's beveled body edge works in conjunction with the mahogany's light weight to create a guitar that's easy on the strap, and extremely comfortable to play.
Neck
The SG Special quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a slim but rounded profile that feels superb in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed deep set-neck joint, and topped with a baked maple fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets. A lack of fingerboard binding and the simple acrylic dot markers visually tie the guitar to its roots, as does a large, four-point, late '60s-style pickguard.
Pickups
To fire up the SG Special with Humbuckers for maximum tone, Gibson USA replaces the SG Special's original single-coil pickups with a pair of its most popular humbucking pickups. The 490R in the neck position is made with an Alnico II magnet and wound to vintage specs for plenty of warm vocal tones with impressive clarity. The 490T in the bridge position also uses an Alnico II magnet and yields vintage-voiced crunch and bite, while still being capable of wailing lead tones and singing sustain through a high-gain amp or overdrive pedal.
Controls
Sticking with the stripped-down Special aesthetics, the guitar has a unique control complement of an independent volume control for each pickup, with master tone control and three-way toggle switch.
Hardware
Your tone is anchored by a timeless "wraparound" bridge, known for its solidity, resonance and sustain, characteristics that are further enhanced by a PLEK-cut Corian nut. A set of vintage-look TonePros tuners with pearloid tulip buttons tops it all off. Wrap it up, and it's a supremely toneful package of stripped-down SG goodness.
