The Tama S.L.P G-Bubinga Shell Pack features 12-ply, 8mm on both the rack toms and the floor tom, whilst the bass drum features a slightly thicker 12-ply, 9mm shell for a heavier, fatter tone. Even though the shells all feature 12 plies of wood and almost identical shell thickness, the thickness of the centre plies is slightly adjusted based on the harmonic overtone characteristics of each drum size. The result of this is an incredibly well balanced tone across the whole kit. The wood offers darker tones than almost all tonewoods, with incredible attack and projection, as well powerful mid to low range frequencies. Bubinga, when compared to other popular tonewoods, is a hard wood with a very tight grain. This results in a dark, deep, dry tone with harmonic overtones and ringing sustain. The shell finish is due to the quilted raw bubinga outer ply.
The S.L.P G-Buginga Shell Pack features Tama's newly designed Direct Flexi-Mount, featuring a two-piece structure that instead of increasing resonance, this system controls the vibration of the shell whilst allowing the shell to resonate more freely than traditional direct-to-shell mounts. The mount is made of a plate that is mounted to the shell and another piece that secures the L-rod of the tom holder/stand. The two sections are connected with a steel shaft, allowing for some horizontal play. This is what controls the vibration of the shell, allowing for increased resonance, projection and tone, as well as providing a smooth decay for a clear sound.
