Harp strings are a key feature of the harp, determining the instrument's tone, resonance, and playability. Crafted from a variety of materials, including gut, nylon, and metal, these strings play a pivotal role in creating the harp's ethereal sound. The choice of string material and gauge affects not only the sound but also the tension and feel under the fingers, making the selection of harp strings a key consideration for harpists of all levels.
The different types of harp strings cater to the diverse needs and preferences of players. Gut strings, prized for their traditional, warm tone, are often favoured by classical and folk harpists. Nylon strings, offering a brighter sound and greater durability, are popular among beginners and those playing in more contemporary genres.
Advancements in materials science and manufacturing techniques have led to the development of harp strings that offer improved longevity, consistency, and tuning stability. This evolution ensures that today's harpists can enjoy a wide range of sounds and textures, from the deeply resonant to the crisply articulate.
Not all harps have 47 strings, pedal harps typically have 47 strings whereas lever harps tend to range between 19 and 40 strings. It is worth noting that there are a vast array of harps that have various numbers of strings so there is not a set number of strings within these parameters that harps should have.
Strings on a harp are simply called strings, although depending on the composition of a string, they can be called other names such as wire wound strings are often called wires. These strings can come in an array of materials for example gut strings, steel strings, and nylon, and are therefore described as such. Gut strings are commonly used on pedal harps, whereas level harps tend to have nylon strings.
26 strings are enough for a harp as this tends to reflect the height of the harp, generally the taller the harp the more strings the harp will have. A 26 harp will roughly be about the 36’’ height mark, making it perfect for younger players.
